Required GFCI installation locations

The ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) must be installed in all locations specified by the National Electrical Code (NEC) 2023 edition, particularly in sections 210.8(A) for dwellings and 210.8(B) for non-dwelling occupancies. GFCI protection is designed to disconnect the circuit when it detects a ground-fault current equal to or greater than 5 mA ± 1 mA, reducing the risk of electric shock to persons. The requirement covers 125 V to 250 V receptacles, single-phase circuits up to 50 A, and three-phase circuits up to 100 A, depending on the environment.

GFCI protective devices must comply with Article 210.8 of the NEC 2023 and be installed in a readily accessible location. Protection may be provided by a combination type arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) with integral GFCI or a GFCI receptacle. In the case of the receptacle, its load terminals can also protect downstream devices. The NEC establishes that the distance from a sink, bathtub, or shower stall is measured along the shortest path the equipment power cord would travel without passing through a floor, wall, ceiling, or fixed barrier. Starting with the 2023 edition, the exclusion for windows and doors was removed, meaning the measurement line may pass through them.

For occupancies other than dwellings, GFCI protection is required for 125 V to 250 V receptacles, single-phase circuits 50 A or less, and three-phase circuits 100 A or less, in the locations indicated below (NEC 210.8(B)).

In addition, GFCI protection is required for 20 V lighting outlets in crawl spaces, and for various appliances listed in 210.8(D) even if hard-wired (e.g., vending machines, sump pumps, electric ranges).

The NEC 2023 recognizes some limited exemptions from the general GFCI protection rule, including:

  • A receptacle dedicated exclusively to fixed electric deicing equipment, provided it is not readily accessible and has ground-fault protection of equipment in accordance with 426.28 and 427.22.
  • A receptacle that supplies only a permanently installed security system.
  • A receptacle for a bathroom exhaust fan in a dwelling, unless the manufacturer’s instructions indicate otherwise. If the fan is installed over the bathtub or shower footprint, GFCI is required per UL guide GPWX.

For rooftops in non-dwelling occupancies, GFCI receptacles need only be readily accessible from the rooftop itself.
