The National Electrical Code (NEC), or NFPA 70, is the most widely used US electrical safety standard, updated every 3 years and spanning over 1,000 pages. It establishes the rules for the safe installation of wiring and equipment in residential, commercial, and industrial occupancies, and is adopted by most states as the reference electrical code.
Organization and structure
Section titled “Organization and structure”The NEC consists of an introduction, 9 chapters, informative annexes numbered A through J, and an index. The organization follows a logical progression:
- Chapters 1 through 4 – General rules for all types of installations (definitions, basic requirements, circuits, overcurrent protection, grounding, wiring methods).
- Chapters 5 through 7 – Special rules for occupancies, equipment, and particular conditions (hazardous locations, machinery, emergency systems).
- Chapter 8 – Communication systems (telephone, radio, television, data networks).
- Chapter 9 – Reference tables (conductor dimensions, resistances, raceway properties).
Each chapter is subdivided into articles, identified by three-digit numbers, which form the backbone of the code.

The indicated temperatures are the standardized maximum values for the insulation or equipment surface under continuous operating conditions, according to the ampacity tables and requirements of each article.
Adoption of the NEC by State
Section titled “Adoption of the NEC by State”The NEC is not a federal law; each state or local jurisdiction decides which edition to adopt and when it becomes effective. The current landscape shows widespread but staggered adoption:
- More than 30 states have adopted the 2020 or 2023 edition, with effective dates ranging from 2022 to 2026.
- Some states, such as California and Texas, already enforce the 2023 edition; others like Florida and New York are in the process of transitioning.
- A few (Indiana, Tennessee, Wisconsin) still maintain earlier editions (2008 or 2017) with their own amendments.
- In states without state adoption (Arizona, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri), each municipality chooses its own regulations.
The authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) is responsible for inspecting compliance with the locally adopted code.
