Small Appliance Circuits
Section titled “Small Appliance Circuits”Two or more 20 A, 120 V branch circuits must supply all wall, floor, countertop, and refrigerator receptacles in a dwelling’s kitchen, pantry, breakfast room, and dining room, in accordance with 210.52(B) and 210.11(C)(1) of the NEC. These circuits may not serve lighting outlets or receptacles located outside those areas. As an exception, a single 15 A or larger circuit is permitted for a specific appliance, such as a refrigerator.

Wall Receptacle Spacing for Kitchens
Section titled “Wall Receptacle Spacing for Kitchens”No point along the floor line of any kitchen wall may be more than 1.8 m / 6 ft from a receptacle, measured horizontally. Any wall section 0.6 m / 2 ft or more in width, uninterrupted by doors, fireplaces, or fixed cabinets without a countertop, is considered wall space. Floor receptacles located 457 mm / 18 in from the wall count toward the required number; those located more than 1.68 m / 5½ ft above the floor are not counted.

Countertop Receptacle Requirements
Section titled “Countertop Receptacle Requirements”Countertop and work surfaces of width 305 mm / 12 in or greater must have receptacles. The maximum horizontal spacing between them is 0.6 m / 2 ft, so that no point on the countertop line is farther from a receptacle. They may be mounted on or above the countertop, provided the height does not exceed 508 mm / 20 in from the surface. Receptacles are not required directly behind a range, countertop-mounted cooking unit, or sink, unless the space behind them exceeds the dimensions indicated in Exception 1 of NEC 210.52(C)(1).

Overcurrent Protection for Kitchen Equipment (MOCP and MCA)
Section titled “Overcurrent Protection for Kitchen Equipment (MOCP and MCA)”The MOCP (Maximum Over‑Current Protection) defines the maximum rating of the fuse or circuit breaker that protects equipment, while the MCA (Minimum Circuit Ampacity) sets the minimum current capacity that the conductors must withstand. Both are calculated from the full-load current (FLA) of the motor and resistive loads. The general formula for MOCP is:
MOCP = (2,25 × FLA of the largest motor) + other motor loads + resistive loads
The obtained value is rounded down to the nearest standard size if not a multiple of 5; if the result is less than the MCA, it is set equal to the MCA and rounded up. No breaker shall be less than 15 A / 15 A. As an example, for a refrigerator with a 5 A compressor and a 0.5 A heater: MCA = 1,25 × (5 + 0.5) = 6,875 A, and MOCP = (2,25 × 5) + 0,5 = 11,75 A → a 15 A / 15 A breaker is selected.
