Residential electrical drawing symbols
Residential electrical drawings use more than 40 standardized symbols to unambiguously represent the components of an installation. Their correct interpretation avoids assembly errors and reduces execution time on site.

International standards and equivalents
Section titled “International standards and equivalents”More than 1 900 standardized symbols are defined in the IEC 60617 series (Graphical representation for diagrams) and in the ANSI/IEEE 315 standard (Graphic Symbols for Electrical and Electronics Diagrams). In the residential field, IEC 60617-11 (installation plans) and ISO 14617 are mainly used; in North America, the NFPA 170 standard is also commonly applied.

What is the difference between a single-line and multi-line symbol in residential plans?
Section titled “What is the difference between a single-line and multi-line symbol in residential plans?”The single-line diagram represents all conductors of a circuit with a single line; it is used in residential distribution plans to simplify the layout. The multi-line diagram draws each conductor separately and is more common in control diagrams or where internal connections need to be detailed.
Which standard governs electrical symbols in residential plans?
Section titled “Which standard governs electrical symbols in residential plans?”In most countries, the international standard IEC 60617-11 is adopted, which contains representations for architectural and installation diagrams. National adaptations may exist, such as IRAM 2260 in Argentina or NCh 4/2003 in Chile, always based on IEC.
How is a three-way switch (staircase) represented in a plan?
Section titled “How is a three-way switch (staircase) represented in a plan?”A circle with two terminals, one supply line, and two outputs to the other switch is drawn. The complete symbol consists of two switches joined by two parallel oblique lines indicating the link conductors; the light point is connected between both units.
What is the standardized symbol for a grounded outlet?
Section titled “What is the standardized symbol for a grounded outlet?”According to IEC 60617, it is represented with a semicircle (or filled circle) and a horizontal line ending in three small parallel lines, one of them longer, indicating the ground contact. In practice, it is accompanied by the initials “2P+T” or the angular ground symbol.
Are there regional variations in residential symbology?
Section titled “Are there regional variations in residential symbology?”Yes. Although most standards align with IEC, in North America a representation based on ANSI/IEEE is preferred, and some European countries maintain their own variants, especially in the way of indicating staircase switches and outlets. In an international project, it is advisable to always attach a symbol legend.
What complementary information accompanies the symbols in an electrical plan?
Section titled “What complementary information accompanies the symbols in an electrical plan?”Each symbol usually has an alphanumeric indication next to it that identifies the circuit (for example, I-1 for lighting, TUG-2 for general purpose outlets) and, in the case of luminaires, the nominal power. Additionally, location dimensions, mounting height, and references to the conduit plan are included.
