Outdoor wiring requirements

Outdoor wiring comprises branch circuits and feeders installed outside buildings, with nominal voltages not exceeding 1000 V AC or 1500 V DC as defined by DIN VDE 0100 and NEC Article 225 standards. These circuits supply power to perimeter lighting, HVAC equipment, pumps, service poles, and detached structures such as garages or workshops, either through overhead, underground, or surface-mounted wiring directly exposed to weather.

Outdoor conductors shall be installed protected against physical damage and environmental conditions by metallic or non-metallic raceway approved for wet locations. Raceways on exterior surfaces must be secured with suitable supports at intervals not exceeding 1.5 m / 5 ft for PVC and 3 m / 10 ft for RMC. Cables exposed to sunlight shall be resistant to ultraviolet radiation or installed inside a conduit. Every point of entry of a raceway into a building shall be sealed with an approved compound to block moisture and pests, in accordance with NEC 225.27. Joints between conduit sections shall be made with watertight adapters and solvent cement compatible with the pipe material.

Voltage drop calculation: ΔV = (2 × L × I × R) / S
where ΔV is the voltage drop in volts, L the circuit length in meters, I the load current in amperes, R the conductor resistance in ohms per meter, and S the temperature correction factor. The maximum recommended voltage drop is 3 % for feeder circuits and 5 % combined with branch circuits.

Every outdoor circuit must have overcurrent protection at its origin, sized at 125 % of the continuous load current per NEC 210.20. Ground-fault protection (GFCI) is required for outdoor receptacles with a trip threshold of 6 mA / 0.006 A, per NEC 210.8. Metallic raceways shall be connected to the grounding conductor using listed connectors. For one- and two-family dwellings, the 2023 NEC requires an emergency disconnect in an accessible, readily visible outdoor location (NEC 225.41), sized for the total service current and permanently marked with the legend “EMERGENCY DISCONNECT” on a red background with white text.

  1. What type of cable is required for an outdoor installation exposed to weather? Cable with moisture- and sunlight-resistant insulation must be used, such as THWN-2 or XHHW-2; if directly buried, type UF cable with minimum conductor size of 2.05 mm / 12 AWG for 20 A circuits.
  2. What is the minimum height for an overhead cable crossing a vehicle access? The minimum height above the driving surface is 5.5 m / 18 ft, and 3.0 m / 10 ft over pedestrian sidewalks, per NEC 225.18.
  3. Is an outdoor disconnect mandatory for dwellings? Yes, since the 2020 edition of the NEC, an emergency outdoor disconnect is required for one- and two-family dwellings, located in an accessible and visible place from the dwelling unit.
  4. Can NM-B cable be used outdoors? No, NM-B cable is only approved for dry indoor locations. Outdoors, UF cable or XHHW-2 conductors inside a waterproof raceway approved for wet locations must be used.
  5. How is an outdoor raceway entering a building sealed? Neutral-cure silicone or polyurethane duct sealant is applied inside and outside the conduit end, forming a plug that blocks moisture, insects, and contaminants.
  6. What is the minimum burial depth for an electrical cable in a residential garden? For UF cable directly buried under non-vehicle areas, a minimum cover of 600 mm / 24 in is required; if housed in rigid PVC conduit, the cover can be reduced to 450 mm / 18 in per NEC Table 300.5.
